  • The alien shapeshifters (Doctor Who 8pm BBC1) debuted in the 1975 Tom Baker serial Terror of the Zygons, in a bid to invade Earth with the help of the Loch Ness Monster.
  • They remained off screen for many years, with passing mentions in 2010 story The Pandorica Opens and The Power of Three (2012).
  • They came back in earnest in 2013 for 50th anniversary special The Day of the Doctor — just in time to meet returning Time Lord David Tennant, who'd once named them as his favourite Who monster.

SUPER SONIC COUPLE

The Doctor (Peter Capaldi) and Osgood (Ingrid Oliver) must avert the terror of the Zygons

Doctor Who

8.00pm BBC1

DRAMA The conclusion to this tense "They are among us" adventure resumes as the first part ended — in thrilling fashion. A bravura cliffhanger saw the Doctor's "presidential plane" apparently blown from the sky by the imposter-Clara. Now, the sequence is reprised, ingeniously, from a different perspective. From that point on, the hunt begins in earnest for the rebel Zygons, alien shape-shifters hell-bent on trashing a quavering ceasefire with Earth.

Horrible transformations are achieved with suitably gross special (and sound) effects, while Peter Harness and Steven Moffat's script plays on notions of trust and identity. But what begins with edgy intrigue and Spooks-like cloak-and-dagger turns into something more profound and philosophical. It's typical of the show's ability to turn on a sixpence and gives Peter Capaldi the chance to go deep into the Doctor's pain.
