The Tardis landed in its latest ever timeslot, which suited a darker tone. Ratings initially fell but there was no decline in quality, with provocative themes, bold experiments and intelligent writing as Steven Moffat remoulded the 12th Doctor into a "raddled old rocker". Jenna Coleman shone in her swansong, while Peter Capaldi proved in Heaven Sent (an instant classic) that he's a one-man constellation.
