Why telly Time Lord's new woman sidekick wants to play James Bond

DOCTOR Who's new time travel sidekick already has an eye on the future - and has James Bond in her sights.

Pearl Mackie, who makes her debut in the sci-fi show on Saturday as gay canteen worker Bill Potts, revealed: "I'd quite to play James Bond. Not Jane Bond - James. If I can be called Bill, I can be called James can't I?"

Pearl, 29, has been signed up for just one series, but added: "It's an amazing platform and it opens a lot of doors. There's so many wonderful characters that don't exist yet - throw it at me.

"For me it's about characters that maybe approach things in a way you haven't seen before."

Pearl revealed Peter Capaldi, who stars as The Doctor, was very supportive and told her to call him any time "it gets too much".

She said of Bill's new life of thrills: "If you're presented with all space and time, you're not going to keep serving chips are you?"
