THE WORD "CARTOONISH" IS USUALLY USED PEJORATIVELY BY TV PREVIEWERS but here it's an apt description, for the threat this week has neither skin nor monster hide and is instead an animated antagonist by the name of Mr Ring-a-Ding (who's given voice by the versatile Alan Cumming).

He's seen at the outset terrifying filmgoers in 1950s Florida by stepping through the screen of a cinema, which is later left creepily abandoned. But before you can say, "Doctor Who, where are you?", the Time Lord and companion Belinda have formed a mini Scooby gang and entered the picture house to quiz its caretaker. What they find is an adventure that, when it comes to both its villain and ambition, certainly pushes at the frame.
