Ulsterman Nesbitt tipped as the next Doctor Who...

ULSTER star James Nesbitt could be facing the biggest challenge of his career as the reincarnation of the legendary time lord Doctor Who.

Gossip columns are rife with rumours that the Coleraine man is next in line to receive the Tardis key.

It is alleged that Jimmy is taking over from the current time lord David Tennant who is rumoured to be quitting at the end of the next series, along with executive producer Russell T Davies to become the 11th incarnation of the famous Doctor.

The 42-year-old father of two's career continues to go from strength to strength. He enjoyed success in the six-part series Jekyll and is well-known for his roles in cop drama Murphy's Law and Adam in Cold Feet. However, stepping into the shoes of the dalek fighting hero could be his biggest challenge yet and Ulster's sci-fi fans cannot wait.

Mal Coney, manager of the Belfast multimedia fantasy store Forbidden Planet and a self-confessed Dr Who fanatic, last night said Jimmy would make an "absolutely tremendous" Dr Who and that he hopes the rumours are true.

Sci-fi fan Mal has a life-size tardis in his north Belfast home which he uses to store his extensive collection of Dr Who memorabilia.

He said: "I don't know whether there's any truth in these rumours about Jimmy Nesbitt but I think he would be an absolutely tremendous Dr Who and I'd love nothing more than a Dr Who with a Northern Irish accent.

"The last time a character on Dr Who spoke with our accent was in an episode in the 1970s called The Sea Devils. I remember I nearly fell off my chair not at the fact a monster was coming out of the sea but because the character spoke with a Northern Ireland accent.

"David Tennant, who has been an excellent doctor, has signalled his intention to leave at the end of this series. And Jimmy Nesbitt has pushed himself into the consciousness of uber-nerds like myself with his performance in Jekyll. He was mercurial in that role and he's a great actor.

"If he is named as the new Dr Who, it would be good for Northern Ireland and we might even see an episode or two filmed here. If we can have peace time in Northern Ireland, I'm sure we can also have space time."
