DR Who groupies trekked to Thin's in Edinburgh the other night for an audience with Tom Baker. The former time traveller, who has swapped the Tardis for taxis, was immaculately turned out in a dirty mac and tweed troosers. Bearded men and girls in pony-tails listened in awe as he discoursed on life and the universe from the perspective of a regular at The Coach and Horses in Soho.

"A man who can make his wife laugh is likely to get an inflated notion of his powers," he blathered. "A man who can make his neighbour's wife laugh is likely to be a menace in the district"

A famously distant father, he recalled a trip to New Zealand, when he was dining in a restaurant with his wife. The waiter told them that the bill had already been paid. Fearing an intrusion of their privacy by a loony fan of the programme they made to leave but were requested to present themselves to their benefactor. The actor vaguely recognised him. "Morgan, isn't it?"

"No," said the benefactor. "It's Baker, Piers Baker. I'm your son."

The elder Baker talked about holy orders and his time as a monk, the "The chastity was appalling! The pain of sexual frustration still palpable. cruellest thing of all was we weren't allowed to look at each other. So you walked around head down."

Soon he was on the most intimate of terms with his fellow novice's footwear-clogs. "I used to think, 'God, I long to kiss those clogs"." These days chastity is not the problem. Randy grannies are his biggest bugbear. "They'd see me and I'd make them tingle," he said modestly. "You know, it still happens. I'll be in Waitrose getting washing-up liquid from the lower shelf of aisle three and those lecherous old bags are pinching me."
