New Doctor Who Jodie's Dalek-table style choice

JODIE Whittaker shows off this season's Time Lord look as she steps from the Tardis in her Doctor Who outfit for the first time. Stylists have teamed the forward-thinking move to put the first female in the role with a nod to the gear worn by the 12 males who came before her. The rainbow top, braces, boots and baggy trousers are vintage Who, regenerating in a time loop fashion continuum that leaves the Daleks for dead and looking so last millennium. Sylvester McCoy wore red braces but Jodie's brown ones are closer to Patrick Troughton's.

Her swishy jacket echoes David Tennant's trench coat, her boots reference Matt Smith's utilitarian footwear and the rainbow stripes across her top match Tom Baker's famous scarf and Colin Baker's patchwork coat.

DIVIDED

But Jodie, 35, has ended up with a grungy, festival vibe all of her own, thanks to her ear jewellery.

At the unveiling yesterday, all the BBC said was: "New series. New Doctor. New look:

Fans were divided. One said: "At least she doesn't have a vegetable strapped to her chest: referring to Peter Davison's celery stick disaster. But many approved of the Downton Abbey star's new costume - created under the direction of Who boss Chris Chibnall - describing it as "quirky", "amazing", "gender neutral", "cute" and "a great outfit".

Some fans were upset by tweaks to the police box, which has undergone changes to its shape and signage. But hopefully they won't stop Jodie taking off. in her debut as the 13th Doctor in the show's 54-year history - when she regenerates from Peter Capaldi's version on Christmas Day.

Waisted chance.. this look is too Morkish

FASHION VERDICT

With the braces, stripes and high-waisted trousers, Jodie Whittaker looks like the love child of US TV's Mork (Mork & Mindy) and ex-Time Lord Tom Baker.

Steadfast Who fans will see a nostalgic nod to previous Doctors but I just can't get Nanu Nanu out of my head. And, trench coat aside, I'm not sure this is what a young, cool Time Lord would wear - she's even got an ear cuff for heaven's sake!

Surely a more edgy look is needed for Jodie while she is saving the universe.
