We tend to think of David Tennant's debut as the Doctor as being relatively recent, and yet we're talking Christmas 2005 here, people. Back then, there was no Marvel Cinematic Universe, no live-action Star Wars TV shows, and sci-fi fans had yet to inherit the Earth. So, it was essentially Tennant, with his tight suit and semi-quiff, who heralded our current era of geek chic - which is why Russell T Davies has been canny in bringing him back for three 60th anniversary specials.
Because, let's face it, in recent years Doctor Who has felt lacklustre, its energy sapped by flashier rivals. But now, the showrunner who led the mid-2000s revival arrives home with a reminder of why a new generation fell in love with this two-hearted hero. Not only is there Tennant, but also Catherine Tate as Donna, as well as a wodge of Disney cash that means the Time Lord can now compete visually with what's available on streamers.
For those wanting more, Doctor Who Unleashed takes us behind the scenes at 7.30pm on BBC3, while Doctor Who: 60 Years of Secrets and Scandals (8.30pm Channel 5) recalls past controversies, including battles with that most feared of adversaries - no, not the Daleks, but Mary Whitehouse.
