"DR WHO" star Tom Baker is to marry his assistant in the science fiction series, actress Lalla Ward.

The couple, whose secret romance started at the beginning of this year, are be married in London near Christmas.

Earlier this month Tom Baker announced that he was retiring from the long-running children's series after five years as the time-travelling doctor - the longest stint by an actor in the part.

Lalla, who has played his girl assistant Romana for over a year is to leave the series, and will be seen only in episodes until Christmas.

Question

The 29-year-old actress said at here Chelsea home today: "We plant to get married between now and Christmas.

"But I have not done this sort of thing before so I don't know how long it will take to organise.

"Tom so busy we're going to try to find a day to fit the wedding in."

Then, talking of their romance, she said: "I suppose it started at the beginning of the year and has been on and off since then but now it is definitely on.

She said 45-year-old Tom, who is divorced with twin grown up sons, didn't "pop the question."

"We just decided to get married because we felt it was something right for us to do.

Tom's decision to quit the series - he stops filming in January but will be seen for the rest of the current series which ends in March - had nothing to do with their plans to marry, Lalla added.
