Editor's letter

I have vague memories of Billie Piper topping the UK charts when she was just 15 with her debut single, the appalling Because We Want to (sample lyrics: "So shake it, move it, use it, groove it/Go with the flow and take off with the show." Yes, quite). It could so easily have been a short flare of success followed by a steady downward trajectory off the playlists into obscurity.

But then — one marriage to Chris Evans later — Billie returned to her first love: acting.

A sharp piece of casting in BBC1's Canterbury Tales allowed her to bury the bubblegum-pop image virtually overnight. Subsequent roles — Bella and the Boys, Much Ado about Nothing — confirmed that she was no flash in the pan but an actress of real depth and range. And then, of course, came Doctor Who, and the great British public fell for her in their millions as she fizzed through the universe with enough energy and chutzpah to power the Tardis.

Hard, at this stage, to imagine the Time Lord's world — or worlds — without her.

But is there life after Doctor Who? That's what we asked in our exclusive interview with Billie. Turn to page 12 to find out the answer.
