What a Christmas treat: an old-fashioned, family-friendly, good-versus-evil adventure from Russell T Davies. The Christmas Invasion is exciting, funny, goodhearted and packed with great special effects. And in David Tennant as the new Doctor Who, it has a thoroughly winning central figure.
Though he spends most of this special episode flat out in his pyjamas, having fallen to Earth following his regeneration (from previous incarnation Christopher Eccleston), Tennant makes his quirky and affable presence felt.
But there's no rest for the Doctor, even on Christmas Day. While his assistant Rose (Billie Piper) and her boyfriend Mickey (Noel Clarke) fend off a group of very sinister Santas, there are dark forces at work in space. The new Prime Minister, Harriet Jones (the splendid Penelope Wilton), has her Christmas ruined by aliens who want to take over the world.
Soon, the entire planet is in crisis, as its citizens head for the nearest high buildings, awaiting a signal to jump. But where's the Doctor when we need him most? Asleep and ailing. Can he wake up in time to save the world?
Our ten-page special guide: page 37; Win a real Dalek!: page 46
