London, Oct. 8.
When BBC-TV acquired the services last January of its present head of drama, Sydney Newman, it picked up not only the most noted dramatic producer in British tv at the moment, but bought the magnet which attracts some of the weightiest of dramatic talent in this burg.
Since Newman's switchover in January, producers, directors and scripters hitherto associated with Newman at ABC-TV — a station for whom Newman established a prime reputation for drama —have also made the change from the weekend-only indie to the seven-days-a-week BBC web.
To start with Peter Luke, previously with Newman as script editor on "Armchair Theatre" at ABC (and subsequently as producer of ABC's 'Tempo") has now landed a top dramatic job at BBC, namely, as producer in charge of the "Festival" series of "spectacular" plays.
Verity Lambert, a production assistant at ABC-TV a while back (on "Armchair Theatre"), now gets her big break as producer on BBC's 52-week serial "Dr. Who." Irene Shubik, story editor of the-"Armchair Theatre" skein. has quit ABC-TV to join BBC-TV in November as a story editor.
Directors like William (Ted) Kotcheff, Philip Saville and Charles Jarrott, who were three of ABC's "big four" contract directors, have now turned freelance and are working or have worked on Newman's new "First Night" and "Festival" drama projects. Alan Cooke, fourth of ABC's more notable directorial talents, also turns freelance at the end of the week, though it is not known yet whether he, too, will run to the Newman camp. Although these freelance directors still pact with the indie station for certain shows, the important point is that BBC or, more strictly, Newman, is siphoning off at least a half share of the talent which once was exclusive to ABC-TV.
Mood goes for writers, too, Alun Owen, for instance, is now scripting for BBC. Before he was ABC's boy. Others have made the switch, too.
