Who's Coming to Channel 17? Dr. Who, That's Who!
DR. WHO, a serialized science-fiction series about a Time Lord who defends earth against every incredible menace imaginable to the special effects people at the British Broadcasting Corporation in London, invades Channel 17 beginning Tuesday, Oct. 25, at 6:30 p.m. Starring Jon Pertwee as the invincible, if eccentric, Dr. Who, the series of cliffhanger episodes is one of the longest running in the history of the BBC. Now Time-Life Films has brought the good Doctor to our shores and viewers will be treated to a hero unlike any created here in the Colonies.
He's no youngster, this hardy Time Lord, yet he sports a flaring red silk cape and bounces in and out of the Time-Space Continuum in a machine called "Tardis." For his earth-bound adventures, Dr. Who switches to a more conventional helicopter and anachronistically motors about in an Edwardian Roadster called "Bessie" which has some very special el equipment that James Bond might well envy.
The villains who always corner Who at the end of each episode are the flakiest assortment of monsters and wierdos you've ever seen Who takes them all in his rather jaunty stride.
DR. WHO has been on the air in England for eight years, during which time the Time Lord has changed assistants (both pretty girls, the sly old fox) but not his red silk cape!
Throughout the series of science-fiction serials, the incredible enemies of earth and its grandest protector, DR. WHO, come and go as rapidly as their time machines and space ships and other paraphenalia will take them. However, certain characters you will meet in the DR. WHO episodes return regularly, and you should get to know them:
DR. WHO (Jon Pertwee) First of all, you have to get this business of being a Time Lord straight. Dr. Who is a middle-aged (by our standards) alien gentleman with a certain dexterity in the time-space continuum. Both a brilliant scientist and a man of action, the Doctor sports a red cape and seems committed to the forces of good.
THE MASTER (Roger Delgado) On the other hand, we have the other Time Lord, known only as "The Master." He's the bad guy, and Dr. Who's arch foe. Watch out for him. he's nasty.
LIZ SHAW (Caroline John) Dr. Who's attractive terrestrial assistant. (Yes, another one. He's entitled. When you're a Time Lord you can pick a second assistant.)
BRIGADIER LETHBRIDGE-STEWART (Nicholas Courtney) Commander of UNIT, a special organization with which Dr. Who works on earth.
DR. WHO is comprised of thirteen science-fiction serials. Each serial is a complete story. The number of episodes in each serial varies from four to seven.
