DOCTOR Who's new time-travelling companion is a streetwise London teenager he meets in an intergalactic milk-shake bar.
The doctor's ultra-modern assistant, Ace, will be played by 24-year-old Sophie Aldred, who makes her television debut in the role.
The doctor, played by relatively unknown Sylvestor McCoy, runs across Ace in a three-part adventure called Dragonfire which ends this autumn's season of the long-running show.
Ace, an expert chemist who once blew up the art room at school, is working as a waitress on another planet when she becomes embroiled in the adventures of the doctor.
Sophie said: "I can't belive this is happening. It's a dream start in television. I used to watch the show when I was a kid and Jon Pertwee played the doctor. I was the typical scared child, peeping out from behind the sofa."
