ACTRESS Nicola Bryant used to hide in fear behind the sofa when Dr Who came on television.

But tonight the 22-year-old brunette steps out into her first acting job—as Dr Who's new assistant.

Viewers will see her make her screen appearance as the Time Lord's assistant when she steps out of the water clad in a bikini.

Just a year ago Nicola was a hard-up drama student dreaming of her first job.

"My agent simply sent me along for an audition, which I thought I had absolutely no chance of getting, and I actually won the part. It was a dream come true."

Nicola's love affair with the long-running series began at an early age. " I suppose I must have been just four years old when I began watching it," she said.

"I was terrified and used to hide behind the sofa—but I'd never miss an episode. I think children Like being frightened by the monsters and Daleks that you find in programmes like Dr Who."

She plays Perpugillian Brown, the Doctor's 25th assistant in more than 20 years of the famous science fiction saga.

"Everything was completely new to me," she said. "I did not really know what to do, which stance to take or which camera to look at, but I am a fast learner."

Her first filming location took her to the Canary Islands holiday spot of Lanzarote, which, with its volcanic crags, can double for the moon.

Tonight the Bryant family will be gathered around the television to toast Nicola's acting debut with a little champagne.

"At first my parents were worried about me choosing acting as a profession," said Nicola, who lives in Putney. "They were worried about all the tales that they had heard. But now, I think they are very happy for me."
