OF ALL the out-of-this-world places to find Dr. Who, none is more unbelievable and fantastic than his arrival this week in the B.B.C.'s Top Ten "blacklist" of most violent TV programmes.
Even more stunned by the event is the good doctor himself, actor Jon Pertwee, whose seven-year-old son is understandably a devoted fan of the series.
"Rubbish," snorted Jon Pertwee in his best irascible Dr. Who manner." Our programme isn't violent, it is all just fantasy. There is no blood, no pain, it wouldn't upset an 80-year-old maiden lady, and my seven-year-old loves it.
"Of course the whole point of science fiction is to be a bit scary, but I think the most alarming item in the programme is our electronic theme music at the beginning. And that is always shown with a rather benign picture of me assure the viewers."
Tonight's "DR. WHO" (B.B.C.1, 5.50 p.m.) begins a new adventure with some "old enemies, the reptillian Ice Warriors from Mars. He also meets a hideous race of one-eyed vegetables and an evil genius operating inside a sort of iron lung.
But there is one incident the audience researchers on the look-out for violence must watch: Dr. Who is challenged to a gladiatorial contest by a seven ft. muscle man.
Don't worry, Dr: Who disposes of the villain with a touch of do-it-yourself karate.
