DR WHO and his assistant Romana are to wed—in real life.

TV actor Tom Baker and actress Lalla Ward revealed their secret off-screen romance yesterday.

They plan to marry before Tom, the fourth Doctor, quits the role in January.

Lalla, 20, has already stopped work on the series after two years as Dr. Who's time-travelling companion, who, like him, was a "Time Lord."

Her departure made Tom realise that life without her would be "appalling."

Tom, 45, said last night: "We were incredibly aware of each other from the very first moment when Lalla joined the show.

"She was in one episode with me — then I went away during a break in the series.

"We came back to work together again and it happened. We fell In love. I realised that after she left the programme I couldn't envisage living without her."

Lalla, daughter of authors Viscount and Lady Bangor, said: "Tom didn't pop the question. We just decided we should marry."

The couple, who now live together in Tom's London flat, both face 1981 without work, although Tom will appear on the screen until March.
