WHEN Pamala Wright moved to Fresno from Oklahoma City about a year ago, she missed her favorite television program — the world's longest-running science fiction show. No, it wasn't "Star Trek." It was "Doctor Who."

"I've been searching for Doctor Who all this time," Wright said Wednesday outside Channel 18 studios. She was among the first in line to go through the Whomobile, a 48-foot-long truck trailer bearing a mock-up of the control panel of the good Doctor's space-and time-traveling machine. It also contained an assortment of animated monsters and villains from the British-made series and "Bessie," a yellow vintage automobile custom-built by one of the six actors to portray the Doctor.

"The Daleks are the worst of the bunch," said Wright, recognizing many of the odd creatures that glowered and muttered threats from behind reinforced mirrored glass. The swooshing noise heard upon entry, she added, was the sound of the machine taking off on its time and space travels.

What else did Wright know about Doctor Who? "He's a firm believer in non-violence, believing he can talk his way out of any crisis," she explained. The good Doctor was not present for Wednesday's fanfare. But thanks to some of his fans like Wright, Fresnans will be able to watch him on Channel 18 beginning Nov. 7.
