WHAT'S THIS? That intergalactic crusader Dr. Who taking a day-trip through time to ancient Egypt? No, it's just actor Tom Baker, who plays the celebrated time traveller in the BBC series, enjoying time off while working on a new TV movie, The Curse of King Tut, to be screened on ITV later this year.
The film, made by HTV with an impressive cast including Raymond Burr, Eva Marie Saint, Harry Andrews, Angharad Rees and Robin Ellis, tells the true story of how archaeologist Howard Carter discovered the tomb of Tutankhamun in 1922—and how a curse, reputed to bring ill fortune to anyone who meddled with the tomb, took its vengeance on the explorers.
Tom Baker plays the somewhat shifty Egyptian, seen below, who was Carter's chief aide on the "dig".
Baker stopped off in Cairo and visited the Great Pyramid of Cheops (left). Baker, who's 6 ft. 2in., had to bend almost double to squeeze into the entrance of the pyramid, his oversize Dr. Who scarf coiled around his neck.
The shadow of Dr. Who followed Baker everywhere. Even as his jet climbed out of Heathrow Airport, bound for Cairo, an air hostess said: "Wouldn't it have been quicker by time machine?"
