THE actor who, nearly 12 years ago, created the part of Dr. Who in the BBC children's serial. William Hartnell, died last week following a stroke. He was 67.
William Hartnell began acting as a boy in 1924 and, after the war — in which he served in the Royal Tank Corps — he had a long career as a character actor in films. He was seen recently in The Way Ahead in BBC-1's Wartime Screen series of films. The role could be said to have established him in the film industry.
But he first became known to millions when, in November 1963. he was invited to play the eccentric time traveller in the first of the Dr. Who stories — Dr. Who and the Tribe of Gum.
Originally contracted for six weeks, he played the part for three years to the delight of both children and grown-ups.
He is survived by his wife Heather, and by a daughter.
