Elisabeth Sladen, who starred in the BBC's Doctor Who series in the Seventies as Sarah Jane Smith, has died of cancer at the age of 63. Former colleagues paid tribute to the Liverpool-born actress, known to her friends and family as Lis. In 2007 her character was reprised in {{SJA|The Sarah Jane Adventures}}, which introduced her to a new generation of fans. Russell T. Davies, creator of the series, which won this year's RTS award for best children's drama, said: "I absolutely loved Lis. She was funny and cheeky and clever and just simply wonderful." Sladen starred in Doctor Who with Jon Pertwee, the third doctor, and his successor Tom Baker. She said of her early days as Sarah Jane: "I hit a lovely time in the series ... and sometimes you can almost taste when something is really working." It had not been widely known that she had been ill. She leaves her husband, the actor Brian Miller, and daughter Sadie.
