In Doctor Who (BBC1) we had two people who loved each other, mind, body and soul, but always had too much on their plates ever to fully express their feelings, and weren't destined to be together anyway - the perfect tragic romance. And this couple didn't have to be climbing all over each other for us to see their longing: one exchanged glance would say it all. Yes, it was sci-fi but, thanks to the sensitive performances of David Tennant and Billie Piper, it was also the most heartrending, soulful, beautifully played-down love story I've ever seen. And yes, I had a good blub at the end. Doctor Who is not only back, revamped and revived, but it's also a triumph of British telly at its absolute best.
