Patrick Troughton, 67, British character actor long associated with horror films who played "Dr. Who" in the hit BBC-TV series in the 1960s, died March 28 in Columbus, Ga., of a heart attack while appearing on a personal appearance tour at a "Dr. Who" science fiction convention.

After early film roles in Laurence Olivier's 1948 "Hamlet" and Joseph L. Mankiewicz' "Escape" remake that year, Troughton became typed as villains and other roles in horror and fantasy features.

He was born and educated in London, where he began his training as an actor before winning a scholarship to the Leighton Rollins Studio for Actors in Long Island, N.Y. His career started after wartime British naval service when he joined the Bristol Old Vic repertory company in England.

He had an impressive role in Bernard Miles' excellent 1950 feature about labor-management relations, "Chance Of A Lifetime," and also appeared that year opposite Robert Newton in "Waterfront" and Disney's "Treasure Island." After a role in the Alan Ladd-starrer "The Black Knight" and Olivier's "Richard III," he appeared in such fantasies and horror pits as "The Curse Of Frankenstein," "Jason And The Argonauts," the 1962 remake of "The Phantom Of The Opera," "The Gorgon," "The Scars Of Dracula," "Frankenstein And The Monster From Hell," "Sinbad And The Eye Of The Tiger," a memorable part as the priest who tries to warn Gregory Peck in "The Omen" and the 1978 non-horror film "A Hitch In Time."

Besides starring as "Dr. Who" for three years, Troughton also appeared on British tv in the "The Six Wives Of Henry VIII," "Family At War," "Dr. Finlay's Casebook," "Misalliance," "David Copper-field," "The Norman Conquests," "Edward And Mrs. Simpson," "The Box Of Delights," "Amy," an episode of "Space: 1999" and most recently the 1985 series "Knights Of God."

Survived by his third wife, four sons, two daughters and a stepchild.
