TV critic Neil Bonner, who drew up the short-lists, said: "The image of Colin Firth emerging from a pond in a dripping shirt has become part of TV folklore. "And the fact Richard Chamberlain and Rachel Ward's affair beat modern rivals like Sean Bean and Joely Richardson in Lady Chatterley's Lover proves classic dramas stand the test of time."
