THE BBC wants to run Dr Who for another 21 years, despite deciding to put the show off the air soon.

The pledge was given yesterday In the latest issue of Radio Times by the Controller of BBC 1, Mr Michael Grade. It was he who recently announced the Dr Who series was being shelved, and caused uproar among devotees.

In the Radio Times article, Mr Grade described the outrage of Dr Who fans as "bordering on the hysterical." The series had only been suspended and not cancelled, Mr Grade insisted.

The ratings for the current series had been disappointing.

"Long-running TV series do get tired and it is because we want another 21 years of Dr Who that we have prescribed a good rest," said Mr Grade.
