| text = ACTOR Paul McGann is set to play the new Dr Who, resurrecting the sci-fi series seven years after it was exterminated by the BBC.

The £5 million TV film is scheduled to go into production for Hollywood producers Universal in Vancouver within the next few weeks and will be screened on Fox Television.

It is thought McGann beat stiff competition from Monty Python's Eric Idle and Four Weddings and a Funeral star Simon Callow, both hotly tipped for the role. "Paul is good looking, but also in a way looks like an alien. He was always our first choice," said a senior BBC source. McGann, who recently starred in the BBC's The Hanging Gale, will be the eighth Dr Who, which has also starred Tom Baker and Jon Pertwee.

The time-warp adventures were cult viewing in the Sixties and Seventies but the series was pulled after 26 years when ratings slumped. The BBC plans a spin-off series if the TV movie is a hit.
