"DR. WHO" TO LAUNCH SHOP LOCALLY' CAMPAIGN

THE TOTAL cost to Derry City Council of this year's Christmas preparations programme being implemented by the Council's Amenities and Leisure Department will be in the region of £11,500, according to Alderman Kevin Barr, chairman of the Amenities and Leisure Committee.

Of this amount, Alderman Barr, said up to £6,500 will be spent on the Christmas street-lighting scheme and on the Press and television advertising scheme and that a substantial part of the other £5,000 will go on schemes designed specially for the children of the city. The latter include almost £1,000 for the poetry and painting competitions, £500 for sweets to be given away free by Santa Claus and £250 towards children's concerts.

Alderman Barr said he was particularly pleased with the part of the programme which was being devoted to the children.

"As another councillor remarked at a recent Amenities and Leisure Committee meeting, Christmas is really for the children," he said. "I hope the community will appreciate the effort the Council to show its goodwill towards the children by providing free competitions, free concerts and the only noncommercial Santa Claus in the city."

Lighting Scheme

"Dr. Who", the famous television character whose real name is Tom Baker, will officially launch an intensive "Shop in Derry this Christmas" campaign being promoted by the City Council when he switches on the lights of the Christmas tree in Guildhall Square on Saturday, 9th

December.

At the same time as the lights other lights will be switched on on the tree go on thousands of in the main shopping areas throughout the city.

In the week following the switching-on the campaign will reach its peak, with the city and its shops being heavily advertised on television and in the local Press.

Alderman Jack Allen who, along with Alderman Joe egan and Alderman Barr, is spearheading the campaign, said that this year the city would look brighter and better than it has ever done before at Christmas time. The number of Christmas lights and Christmas trees in the city would be almost treble what it was last Christmas.

He added that the total value of the lighting scheme along for the city this Christmas will be in the region of £17,000. This includes nearly £6,000 worth of equipment purchased under a similar scheme last year.

Of the cost of this year's scheme the City Council will be contributing half, with the city traders raising the other half. The Council will also be contributing an additional. £1,000 towards the advertising campaign.

The areas of the city which will have Christmas lights this year will be Spencer Road, Duke Street, Carlisle Road, Ferryquay Street and The Diamond, Waterloo Street, Waterloo Place and Guildhall Square, Strand Road and Great James Street. In addition to the Christmas tree at Guildhall Square there will also be trees at Waterloo Place, the fountain at the bottom of Carlisle Road and Duke Street.

Alderman Allen said that the final details of the whole campaign had not yet been worked out.

About the visit of "Dr. Who", he said, "Dr. Who" would be visiting various areas of the city during the morning and early afternoon and would be returning to London after the switching on ceremony, which is expected to be around 3.30 p.m.
