A SCOTS actress about to play Mrs Thatcher on TV has been signed up to be Doctor Who's stroppiest ever assistant.

Lindsay Duncan, 58, was yesterday announced as the Timelord's latest sidekick, following in the footsteps of Billie Piper and Catherine Tate.

She will join David Tennant, 37, in the second of four specials to be screened during 2009.

The show will be the follow-up to Planet Of The Dead, which is due to broadcast this Easter on BBC1.

Lindsay, whose character will be called Adelaide, said last night: "I'm thrilled to be involved in Doctor Who.

"I've never done anything like this before and I'm really looking forward to working with David and the Doctor Who team." The episode is due to go into production in the spring.

Writer Russell T Davies said: "Lindsay is an incredibly talented actress and I've been an admirer of her work for some time.

"We're delighted to announce that she will be playing the Doctor's most strongminded companion yet." Lindsay has previously appeared as Servilia in the lavish mini-series Rome, which provoked controversy with some of the most explicit and violent scenes ever seen on British TV.

She will star in BBC2's Margaret later this month, a drama which depicts former Prime Minister Mrs Thatcher in the days before she was forced out of office in 1990.

But the Doctor Who role will not be the first time the Edinburgh actress has appeared alongside a timelord.

Two years ago she was on stage in a play with Matt Smith, who will take over from Tennant when he bows out at the end of this year.

Matt, 26, who was unveiled as the 11th Timelord last month, is the youngest actor to take on the role.

Meanwhile, one of Doctor Who's deadliest enemies arrived in Glasgow yesterday ahead of a major exhibition aimed at dedicated fans of the Timelord.

The Cybermen made an appearance at Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum to help launch the upcoming Doctor Who exhibition, which runs from March 28 until January 4, 2010.

It will feature all the best baddies including Daleks, Sontarans and the Ood.
