SECTION: NEWS; Pg. 5

HUNDREDS of Dr Who fans from around the globe came to Coventry to pay homage to their hero of the small screen.

The fans - from as far afield as Germany, Wales, Scotland, America and Australia - met with stars from the show, had their pictures taken next to their idols and built up their memorabilia in the event organised by Devon -based Battlefield VI.

They were also treated to behind-the-scenes secrets of the show which enjoyed a successful run on screen for almost 30 years.

Sylvester McCoy, who played the seventh Dr Who, and Peter Purves, who played Steven Taylor were among the stars at the convention's first day at the Hotel Leofric on Saturday.

Terry Molloy, who played Davros Mk III, was also there, along with Louise Jameson, who played Leela, and went on to star in EastEnders as Rosa Di Marco.

More than 400 fans turned up over the two days.

Sylvester McCoy, who played the role for three years, said: "I go to a lot of conventions like this in Britain - there is about one a month - and I still go to quite a few of them in America and Australia.

"I think it is wonderful and astounding that these type of events attract so many people even now, all these years after the series ended.

"The very first convention I went to was in Georgia, in the States, and there were some astounding people there. One group of fans all turned up to the event dressed as Tom Baker.

"The following is amazing, as everyone here this weekend can see."

Phillip Lodge, a lifelong fan, travelled from his home in Stonehouse, Gloucestershire, for the event.

He said: "I started following the programme from the age of about 12 and watched a number of doctors, including Jon Pertwee, Tom Baker and Sylvester McCoy.

"I go to quite a number of conventions - this is the second one I have been to in Coventry, and they are quite something. It is excellent."

Paul Griffiths, from Bournemouth, said he had been an avid fan since the age of five despite his parents banning him from watching the show.
