| text = Dr Who is adding his celebrity backing to the Year of the Volunteer campaign by calling. on disabled people across the country to give their time for free.

Actor Christopher Eccleston, who starred as the time traveller, is supporting the Year of the Volunteer campaign's Disability Month by calling for more volunteers.

In his role as ambassador for learning disability charity Mencap, the star is especially urging disabled people to get involved in voluntary schemes in their community.

He said: "I have seen firsthand the huge rewards that come through volunteering.

"Across the country thousands of disabled people will be volunteering by helping those both with and without a disability. Those who have benefited from the support of a volunteer understand the difference that volunteers can make to the quality of other people's lives.

"That is why many disabled people are volunteers themselves."

September is Disability Month in the Year of the Volunteer and activities across the country are highlighting projects that rely on the support of disabled volunteers.

Events include "Celebrate and Motivate", a celebration day organised by Mencap at Tatton Park in Cheshire on September 26.
