Fans' fury as BBC axe telly hero

THE BBC has done a Dallas on another top programme ... DR WHO.

And last night fans of the highly popular show were up in arms at BBC Controller Michael Grade after he axed the space-age Doctor — played by actor Colin Baker — for 18 months.

Mr Grade has already chopped beauty contests, Superstars, the Hot Shoe Show and the World's Strongest Man.

His decision to put off soap opera Dallas ended in a furore — and a decision to screen it again soon, after all.

Now the Dr Who fans hope to do a Dallas and force Mr Grade to change his mind.

A leading fan club member, David Saunders, said: "It's devastating news.

"It's too early to say what action we'll take."

Peter Haining, author of a book on the series, said: "After 22 years to think that anybody could contemplate taking it off the screen is disgraceful. It must be stopped."

Actor Colin Baker was told yesterday there was not enough cash for the show, and it would not be back until 1986.
