Composer Ron Grainer, who wrote theme music for a string of hit TV programmes, has died, aged 57 of cancer. His themes included Dr Who and Steptoe and Son—both for BBC.

He also wrote theme tunes for TV's Comedy Playhouse and That Was The Week That Was and for the Paul Temple radio series.

Australian-born Ron arrived in Britain in 1952—with just £200. But a job as a rehearsal pianist for the BBC put him on the road to success.

Recent TV theme hits included Edward and Mrs Simpson and Tales of the Unexpected.
