DR WHO's beautiful assistant Romana takes a trip back in time tomorrow night.

Actress Lalla Ward, who plays the Doctor's time travel companion, stars as Ophelia in one of Shakespeare's best-known plays, Hamlet (BBC 2, Sunday, 7.15).

Lalla, 28, says: "It is the first time I have done any Shakespeare and it was all pretty terrifying.

"Playing in Shakespeare is every actor's dream, but I've never been so frightened as I was at the first rehearsal.

Love

"If I am any good at all it's thanks to the rest of the cast. Everyone was lovely and helpful to me."

The star-studded production is led by Derek Jacobi as Hamlet, Claire Bloom as his mother, Gertrude, and Eric Porter as Polonius, Ophelia's father.

In the play Ophelia goes mad and drowns herself because Hamlet does not return her love.

Lalla says: "She is the sort of girl who would have lived happily ever after if she had married the right man."

And an unhappy love affair is something Lalla knows about.

She dropped out of acting and went to France for 12 months after her romance with a married actor ended in 1978.

She says: "I don't think he was ready to get deeply involved, but I took it seriously and was terribly upset when we broke up."

Time

A new series of Dr Who starts in September, but it will be Lalla's last.

She says: "I decided it was time to move on and branch out.

"I was wondering how to tell the producer I would like to be written out, and apparently he was wondering how to tell me he would like me to leave!"
