LIVERPUDLIAN actress Elisabeth Sladen had to cut short a visit back home looking after her husband and father, to return South for to intense session of rehearsals ... and starvation dieting.

She who spent three TV years as Dr. Who's assistant Sarah Jane Smith, and who has an ever-growing list of programme credits to her name, is about to re-appear on our screens playing major roles in two new productions

Elisabeth returns to the part of Sarah Jane — minus Dr. Who — for an hour-long special called "Girl's Best Friend." And she's also to star in a new B.B.C. serialisation of Gulliver in Lilliput as the flirtatious Lady Flimnap ... and that's where the dieting comes in.

At her father's home in Auckland, Moseley Hill, where actor-husband Brian Miller has been staying while filming for four episodes of Coronation Street, Lis, aged 32, said: "I've been told I have got to go back to London for costume fittings ad preparation for Gulliver in Lilliput.

The costumes are absolutely fantastic, but I have to get down to a 18-inch waist to get into mine. For a change, I'll have a new, specially made corset, but it's still no fun feeling the pinch all day."

Launched as an actress originally at Liverpool's Playhouse, Lis has most recently graced our television screens co-starring with a shaggy dog and two children in a popular paint commercial.

Before leaving Liverpool to return to her London home, she said: "I know I'm in for some hard work now, but, honestly, that commercial was the most exhausting thing I have ever done."
