Helen Mirren, fresh off her starring turn as the Queen, has urged the BBC to cast a female Time Lord for the next series of Doctor Who.

But the 67-year-old veteran actress has ruled herself out of the running.

She told the London Daily Mirror there were plenty of female candidates who would "absolutely kill" in the part, which is vacant now that Matt Smith, the 11th Doctor since the show began in 1963, has announced he is stepping down.

"I'm so sick of that man with his girl sidekick. I could name at least 10 wonderful British actresses who would absolutely kill in that role," added Mirren.

Despite her protestations, one British bookmaker has given Mirren 25-to-1 odds of being offered the role.

But she said: "Oh, please, I would put much longer odds on it than that."

British television actresses Olivia Colman and Fiona O'Shaughnessy have also been suggested as possible female replacements as the legendary Time Lord.

Billie Piper, who played the travelling companion Rose, has also been suggested as a future Doctor.

A Sunday newspaper said 35-year-old actor Rory Kinnear had been offered the part-

But a BBC spokesperson said: "... The search has only just begun so only believe what you hear from us, and that won't be for a while."

Caption: Helen Mirren knows many women who could be Doctor Who.
