This is the unknown girl who steps into a plum TV role which should make her a star.

But her name is Maureen O'Brien and next year she will appear in Dr. Who, the B.B.C.'s Saturday serial.

Carole Ann Ford is giving up the role of 15-year-old Susan Foreman in the space-fiction serial because the B.B.C. says at 24 she is too old to play a teenager.

Now her role as Dr. Who's granddaughter will be written out of the script.

Filming

And Maureen will play Vicki, a survivor from a crashed airship. Yesterday she tried on her costume for the first time and last night she was at the B.B.C.'s Shepherd's Bush studios filming the episode in which the viewers will first see her next month.

Maureen is 21 and was working as an assistant stage manager in a repertory in Liverpool until the B.B.C. picked her for the children's serial which adults watch.

How will the B.B.C. manage Carol's disappearance?

A spokesman explained last night: "Dr. Who is not just one long serial, but a collection of different stories. The granddaughter we'll just be written out of the next one."
