SIR-- Mrs Mary Whitehouse ([[Violence for young audiences|Jan. 13]]) would surely be better employed instructing, admonishing, lecturing or persuading owners of television and radio sets to study the art of using the on/off button on their sets.

The BBC cannot be expected to cater for the parents and guardians of young children who plonk them down in front of the television screen and then complain about the effect it has on them.

I would not have thought that "Dr. Who" was intended for 5-year-olds.

I suppose the same could be said of viewers of any age who voluntarily switch on programmes which offend them. For Heaven's sake, if you don't like it, switch it off and leave others to enjoy the same freedom of choice.
