Capaldi's nerves on his first full day on set with co-star Jenna

PETER Capaldi is one of the most experienced actors to take on the role of Doctor Who - but that didn't mean he wasn't nervous on his first full day of filming yesterday.

The 55-year-old Scot is just two months younger than what the first and oldest Time Lord, William Hartnell, was when the first episode aired in 1963.

But as he prepared to join co-star Jenna Coleman on the set, Capaldi admitted: "New job, first day, slightly nervous.

"Just like the Doctor, I'm emerging from the TARDIS into a whole other world."

Coleman, who plays Clara Oswald, will continue as the Doctor's companion.

In rehearsal pictures of the pair released yesterday, Capaldi is seen in the outfit his predecessor Matt Smith wore when he regenerated in the Christmas Day episode.

Details of Capaldi's own Time Lord costume were still being kept firmly under wraps, although his look is expected to mix old and new.

The more than 10million viewers who tuned in for the festive special got their first glimpse of the 12th Doctor.

And as production of the new series started, Doctor Who boss Steven Moffat said: "First the eyebrows, then, at Christmas, the face. Coming soon, the whole Doctor. In the Cardiff studios, the Capaldi era begins."

The BBC's controller of drama commissioning Ben Stephenson added: "Excitement and anticipation fills the air as Peter Capaldi's Doctor takes control of the TARDIS for the very first time today.

"It's going to be one hell of a ride and I can't wait for the journey to start."

It's expected Doctor Who fans will have to wait until the second half of the year to see the new series.

In the meantime, Capaldi is due to star in BBC1's new series The Musketeers, which begins later this month.

It was revealed yesterday that the actor, who plays Cardinal Richelieu, dislocated a thumb after getting it tangled in a costar's frock on the set.

But showing he's got the courage needed to play the Doctor, Capaldi twisted the injured digit back into place himself.
