SICKENING scenes from horror flick The Texas Chainsaw Massacre have turned up — in a rental DVD of Doctor Who.

A manufacturing blunder led to footage of a maniac hacking off limbs appearing midway through an episode seen by hundreds of families.

A BBC insider said: "It's very, very embarrassing. Doctor Who's a family show and the most scary thing is probably a Dalek, yet the Texas Chainsaw Massacre films are among the most frightening ever made."

The	offending scenes are from The Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Beginning. a 2006 prequel to the original Texas Chainsaw Massacre (1974) which spawned a bloodthirsty series banned in many countries for its violence. The killings turn up in the first episode of the second series of Doctor Who — called New Earth — in which The Doctor and his assistant Rose hop in the Tardis and head for mankind's future home in space.

The insider added: "The problem may have come about because both DVDs were made at the same time for release on the same day."

A BBC spokeswoman blamed a "manufacturing problem" for the "incorrect footage".

She added: "We apologise for any distress we may have caused. We are doing our best to rectify this problem."
