But Peter Davison, who becomes doctor No. 5 in January, says: "I don't want to be known only as the doctor."

So Peter, already familiar to British TV viewers for parts in Sink Or Swim and Holding The Fort, says: "I'm keeping all my other work going."

While he awaits his first trip through time and space, addicts of the show are being given a nostalgic trip back over its 18-year run.

During the next few weeks, classic stories, starring all the doctors, will be repeated on British television.

The original doctor, William Hartnell, was first seen in 1963.

Hartnell, who died in 1975, stayed as the doctor until 1966, when he handed over to Patrick Troughton.

Troughton looks back on his Dr Who days with affection.

He says: "For three years I had a wonderful time, an absolute ball, but I thought it would not be a good thing to get caught as one character for too long."

In 1970 he gave way to Jon Pertwee, who says: "I revelled in being the doctor. It was a lovely part."

Jon moved on in 1974 and has now found equal fame as scarecrow Worzel Gummidge in the award-winning TV comedy series.

His successor in the tardis was Tom Baker, who travelled widely promoting the part.

The role brough him riches, fame, and a wife-actress Lalla Ward who played his assistant Romana in the series.

Says Tom: "It is certainly the best part I've ever played.

"Do you know I'm even famous in the [[broadwcast:Middle East|Middle East]]?

"I bumped into an engineer in a shop in London and he told me that he saw me on TV in [[broadwcast:Saudi Arabia|Saudi Arabia]] one Christmas and that I reminded him of home."

Now the tardis, the daleks and an ever larger audience awaits the arrival of Peter Davison.
