The Strain's David Bradley on his favourite fantasy roles

As Guillermo del Toro's fantasy drama The Strain returns to Watch this week, sword-wielding Holocaust survivor-turned-vampire hunter Professor Abraham Setrakian, played by David Bradley, is back on the trail of The Master, but with a dark secret from his past that he is keeping from Eph (Corey Stoll) and Nora (Mia Maestro).

Before the bloodletting begins, we asked the 73-year-old British actor, who's becoming a regular fixture in fantasy films and TV shows, to pick his favourite roles...

ABRAHAM SETRAKIAN

Vampire hunter in The Strain 'Abraham has a rich back-story and little flashes of sly humour that stop The Strain being just a horror story. It's great to play someone so pro-active with a real mission.'

ARGUS FILCH

Hogwarts caretaker in the Harry Potter films

'The Chamber of Secrets is my favourite because I had some terrific scenes — I loved the one where Fikh's cat was petrified and strung up, and he blamed Harry. My daughter, a teenager at the time, played one of the schoolkids and it was great having her there on set.'

WALDER FREY

Treacherous nobleman in Game of Thrones

'When I read the script, I thought Walder was a disgusting character with a suspiciously under-age bride, but I enjoy playing him. He is so malevolent that there is something almost funny about him. I get lots of people in the street yelling friendly abuse at me for killing Rob Stark at the Red Wedding.'

SOLOMON

A futuristic pirate in Doctor Who 'Solomon was wonderfully wicked and showed his brutality by killing a load of Silurians. I thought that was going to be [the end of] my Doctor Who experience, but Mark Gatiss asked me to portray former Doctor William Hartnell in An Adventure in Time and Space. It was a real responsibility. Hartnell had a good side and bad, and Mark wasn't afraid to show it like it was — warts and all.'
