I AM writing to commend the BBC for the new-look Doctor Who (Mondays BBC1). The team have finally got the right formula. Special congratulations to the new Doctor, Sylvester McCoy, and also to Bonnie Langford, who is not as OTT as some people seem to think.
I especially like the new opening title sequence and music and the death traps which send the victims to their doom in a bubble ... a credit to the special effects team. I eagerly await future episodes and I hope Sylvester McCoy stays on for a long, long time.

Visually superior
At last, a new series of Doctor Who to fire the imagination of potential young scientists and to provide a visually superior alternative to commercial television's therapy for the brain-dead, Coronation Street ...

Inspired choice
... Sylvester McCoy is an inspired choice and this programme must not be allowed to die ... The new series boasts witty scripts, superb incidental music and is tremendous fun.

Completely disarmed
I was going to write to complain about the poor coverage given by your magazine to the return of Doctor Who (Radio Times 5-11 September). An article relegated to Back Pages which belied the new, more adult time slot ... But I'm not going to, because I have been completely disarmed by Sylvester McCoy's wonderful performance ...
Was this just post-regeneration euphoria on my part? No! The real Doctor is back ... For the first time in six-and-a-half years I can't wait to see the next episode .. .

Best yet
Melanie is practising Venusian yoga on the floor of the Tardis, the sixth Doctor has a migraine and can't reach his pain killers in time, the Tardis crashes in a quarry in Frome and the regenerated Doctor falls into the clutches of Alexis Carrington's scheming sister ...
Marvellous. Doctor Who is back with a vengeance and Sylvester McCoy promises to be the best Doctor yet ...
My only gripe is that the series is up against Coronation Street in the ratings battle ...

Senile dementia
As a long-time fan (I remember the dignity of William Hartnell) I find it sad to see the great age of the Doctor beginning to show itself. Senile dementia, second childhood, call it what you will. It started after Jon Pertwee and now, with Sylvester McCoy, it's in its last stages ... I wasn't sure whether I was watching Doctor Who or Play School ...
