Noel Clarke gets the chance to impress the Doctor when Mickey is forced to single-handedly battle the Slitheen

DRAMA

DOCTOR WHO

Saturday BBC1

Actor Noel Clarke is the first to admit that his character in Doctor Who is hardly the brave. heroic type. He plays Rose's boyfriend Mickey Smith, who was absolutely terrified in the first episode when he was swallowed by a wheelie bin controlled by aliens.

"He's just like Shaggy from the cartoon Scooby-Doo," jokes Noel, 29. "He is a total scaredy cat. A whimpering damsel in distress. A hapless, clumsy, useless guy!"

So it may come as a surprise that in episode five of the 13-part series, it's down to Mickey to save the world.

An alien race called the Slitheen have landed on Earth and hope to start an interplanetary war, which could result in Earth being nuked. That will give the Slitheen the chance to sell the planet off around the universe as scrap and fuel.

With the Doctor and Rose trapped inside 10 Downing Street, Mickey is the only one who can stop the aliens as he has escaped capture. "I don't want to give too much away and tell you exactly what he has to do," Noel says. "But even the Doctor. who usually calls him things like 'Mickey Idiot', is quite impressed by the end."

Noel. who played Wyman in Auf Wiedersehen, Pet, loves working on Doctor Who — even if some of the scripts seem quite outlandish!

"Being gobbled up by a wheelie bin is probably one of the most ridiculous things I've ever done," he laughs. "But none of it is meant to be deadly serious. And the scripts are brilliant. Russell T Davies is one of this country's greatest writers."

Noel, who lives in west London with his girlfriend, is about to sign up for the second series of Doctor Who. Meanwhile, he is concentrating on writing, another of his passions.

"I've just finished a film I wrote called Kidulthood." he reveals. "But if I could work with anyone, it would be Samuel L Jackson.

"I've actually plotted a whole script for him that I'm going to write, in the hope that one day he will read it!"
