DR. WHO, Tom Baker, is quitting -- and a woman may take over from TV's famous Space doctor.

Tom says he wants to go while still at the top, and denies leaving because of a row. He is the longest serving of the four actors to play the doctor.

The BBC says the part will now probably go to an actress.

Tom, who will continue In the series -until next March, said .. yesterday he was leaving because "things were beginning to drag.

"I felt.. that after seven years I couldn't add much more to the part. I had developed it as much as I humanly could."

He also said he was "very upset" when K9, the doctor's robot dog, was axed.

Children

"I will miss my contacts with thousands of children. They run up to me in parks to say hello," he said.

"I have travelled all over, the world promoting the series which has been a marvellous seller. Now it's time for me to move on."

Tom was working on a building site when he landed the £1,000-a week job and says he now has no firm plans.
