BBC tuning up time machine for 'Dr. Who' LONDON - Science-fiction cult hero Doctor Who is getting ready to board his time-traveling Tardis vehicle once again. The BBC has announced that it will make a new series of the show "Doctor Who," which has won popularity around the world over the past 40 years. The title role is yet to be cast (HR 9/29).

Lorraine Heggessey, controller of BBC1, said that a rights issue over the title had been resolved, and she has green-lighted scripts from Russell T. Davies ("Queer as Folk," "Bob and Rose").

The new series will be produced by BBC Wales with Mal Young, controller of BBC Continuing Series, Julie Gardner, head of drama, BBC Wales, and Davies acting as executive producers.

"Doctor Who" has been reincarnated many times since it first appeared on BBC television in 1963. "'Doctor Who' is a much-loved, truly iconic piece of television history. It's time to crank up the Tardis and find out what lies in store for the Doctor," said Young.
