[edit]

ACTOR William Hartnell is quitting the BBC 1 children's science fiction serial Dr. Who.

The 59-year-old actor's contract with the BBC is due for renewal in November - but he has decided that it should not be renewed.

He said last night "I think three years is good innings and it is time for a change.

Mr. Hartnell, who plays Dr. Who in the Saturday evening television serial, has become a favourite with millions of young viewers.

The serial began as a children's special -- but quickly drew an audience from parents as well.

Mr. Hartnell will last be seen as the white-haired time traveller on October 29. He is planning to return to stage and film work.

A friend said last night : "It has been a great strain for William over the last three years. The serial demands a great deal from him as an actor.

"He has often said he would has like to leave and return to the theatre."

A BBC official said : "We are very sorry to lose Mr. Hartnell."

"He's won a huge following from younger viewers. We are now looking for a replacement but it's too early to say whom we have in mind."
