It's time for a new Time Lord. GUY DAVIS checks in on Peter Capaldi, who is taking over as the 12th incarnation of classic character Doctor Who.

That sound you're hearing? The one stirring you from a deep sleep as you try to enjoy a lazy Sunday morning? Yes, the sound is alarm clocks all over the country going off at some ungodly hour.

Who would do this to themselves? Who would rise from a cosy bed at this hour for any reason other than a call of nature or a burning house? Doctor Who fans, that's who.

You see, the ABC knows devotees of the iconic, long-running UK sci-fi series are obsessively keen on seeing the adventures of their favourite Time Lord as soon as humanly possible. So they've fast-tracked the new episodes, airing them at 4.50am Sunday morning.

(Fear not, Who admirers who also enjoy sleep, the episode will be replayed at the more civilised time of 7.40pm that evening.)

One could hardly blame fans for being excited, though. They have gone about eight months without their favourite character and this new season is introducing a new version of the Doctor – his 12th incarnation, in fact – in the form of Peter Capaldi.

Bringing the well-regarded Capaldi, perhaps best known as The Thick of It's profane spin-doctor Malcolm Tucker, on board is both a nod to the show's history, as well as a step forward.

After all, the past two embodiments of the Doctor have been the relatively youthful David Tennant (34 when he took the role) and Matt Smith (a wee slip of a lad at 27), both departures from the traditional Time Lord type, who tended to have a few miles on the meter.

Capaldi is 56, and he looks it. But there's also a flinty energy and intelligence to his screen presence and that works a treat when it comes to his portrayal of the Doctor.

There's also humour in his performance. Sometimes it has a bit of a bite to it (such as when he shuts down any hope of romance or even flirtation with his "companion" Clara, winningly played by Jenna Coleman, by saying, "You might as well flirt with Doctor Who, Sunday, ABC, 4.50am and 7.40pm.
