[edit]

HE may be a Time Lord but, in fact, Doctor Who is a mere 50 years old in 2013 when the anniversary will be marked by a set of stamps.

Eleven will be issued in March featuring each of the actors who have played Doctor Who from William Hartnell to Matt Smith. All are first class. Another five-stamp set will show the Tardis and some of his famous foes - a Dalek, a Cyberman, an Ood and a weeping angel.

Andrew Hammond, of Royal Mail, said: "These stamps pay tribute to the brilliant actors who have played the Doctor over the years as well as the adversaries that helped make the show so popular." The first Doctor Who was in November 1963. The programme now attracts audiences of up to 16 million in the UK and has been sold to more than 200 countries.

Matt Smith is the youngest actor to play the Doctor and Tom Baker is the oldest still alive. Fiona Eastwood, of BBC Worldwide Consumer Products, said: "The collection will delight all Doctor Who fans."
