Sex Swap For Tv's Timelord: Daniela Nardini Set To Be The First Female Dr Who
TV BOSSES are lining up Scots actress Daniela Nardini to be the first female Dr Who.
But she faces fierce competition for the role from English star Helen Baxendale - who is currently in the smash-hit US comedy Friends.
The BBC announced last week it wanted to bring back the time travelling doc in a £10 million film.
And Beeb bosses believe BAFTA award winner Daniela could be ideal for the part made famous by the likes of William Hartnell, Jon Pertwee and Tom Baker.
A telly insider last night revealed: "Daniela is certainly a front-runner, but it is a question of whether she wants it, or whether we will get away with turning the Time-Lord into a Time-Lady.
"She's popular with an important section of the viewing audience - the 20 and 30 somethings - because of the success of This Life and she's sexy."
But the source added: "There's also a big lobby for Helen Baxendale, who got her big break with the BBC in the medical series Cardiac Arrest.
"She's a name in the US now because of Friends and that's a major plus as far as overseas sales and joint production partners are concerned.
Changing the good doctor's sex shouldn't pose any problems, according to the Beeb insider.
He said: "The Doc is a highly evolved 2000-year-old alien with superhuman powers. It would be easy to conclude he has components of both sexes in his genetic make-up, and for future adventures will experience time travel as a female."
Colin Baker, who played Dr Who between 1983 and 1986, has already backed the sex-change plan.
He said: "Many traditional fans are appalled at the thought, I'm all in favour."
