Doctor Who: The Complete Eleventh Series. 3 discs. 510+ min. dist. by BBC Studios, bbc.com 2019. DVD 883929629275. $59.99; Blu-ray UPC 883929629299. $64.99. SDH subtitles. SF/TV

The iconic role of Doctor Who has been played by 12 actors over the years. Jodie Whittaker (Broadchurch) plays the 13th Doctor and is the first woman to do so. This Doctor lands in Sheffield, UK, and quickly befriends Ryan, Yaz, and Graham. This season is especially memorable because the writers tackle various social issues such as racism and finding differences instead of similarities among the populace in an overt way that makes it a thoughtful viewing. Old nemeses the Daleks and Cybermen are not featured this season, but rather new and memorable enemies show up only to be defeated by the intrepid Doctor. Among the extras are commentaries and various shorts on the production and casting. VERDICT Fans of Doctor Who will be overjoyed by Whittaker's portrayal as the memorable title character. Highly recommended for all libraries.—Jason L. Steagall, formerly with Gateway Technical Coll. Lib., Elkhorn, WI
